Early childhood

I discovered some interesting little tidbits about my early childhood. Apparently, I learned to speak a lot later than most youngsters, and some people asked my parents if I was mute or something. Though my mom said that while I was probably capable of speaking, I might've 'chose' not to. But anyway, once I did start talking, I caught up with the other kids really quickly.

Also, there was a time in preschool when the teacher asked me to read part of a book out loud, and when I did, a couple of kids' mothers (who happened to be present that day) didn't believe that I was actually reading it; they said, "No way a kid that age can read that well! Someone must've helped her memorize it!" I don't remember that incident, but my mom remembers it really well (no doubt she was annoyed that those others mothers were accusing her daughter of being some kind of a fake, lol). Heck, maybe they were even less convinced that the child of immigrants could have better English reading skills than their own kids. *shrugs*

I'm melting...

Man, it's so bloody hot! It's 31 degrees Celsius now, with a humidex of 38. It's been ungodly hot yesterday, too, and will continue to be so for the next little while. Environment Canada has also issued a 'High Heat and Humidity Warning' for the Montreal area.

It wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the humidity. The humid air makes it SO icky and sticky. The forecast also calls for thunderstorms; that's not too bad, I like thunderstorms (I find them entertaining, lol).

Happy birthday to me!!! ~_^

Already 22 years old...Time is slipping by so quickly (it sounds corny and so clichéd, but it's true!).

*sigh* >:(

One of my pet peeves is when people make dumbass remarks about what you're majoring or specializing in. Some common responses to degrees in Geography (made by people who don't think before opening their dumb mouths): "So you draw maps all day?", "So you colour in maps all day?", and "So you memorize countries and place names?"

A couple of my classmates from my Remote Sensing class, who major in archaeology, told me that whenever they tell people their major, the two most common responses they get are: "So do you dig up dinosaur bones?" and "So you're like Indiana Jones?"

My brother, who's doing his PhD in Statistics at the University of Washington, told me that people say to him, "So you make pie charts all day?" and "So you're doing your PhD on number crunching?"

Jeez.

Graduation

All the graduates from the Department of Science had their convocation ceremonies yesterday. What was pretty cool was that you could watch the ceremony live on the internet; that'd be pretty good for people who can't make it to Montreal for their relative/friend's graduation. Also, you don't have to sit through the entire ungodly boring thing; you can just tune in about an hour after the official start of the ceremony (hence skipping all those blah-blah-blah speeches about heading out into the world and making a difference, etc etc), wait for your friend/relative to get their diploma, and then switch off. Convenient, eh? ^_^

I watched part of the diploma distribution thing, and I saw some of my fellow Geography classmates graduate. I also saw my former Chemistry classmates graduate, too. Watching the ceremony made me feel kinda bummed out, though, 'cause I knew that if I hadn't quit chemistry, I would have been receiving my diploma at that very same ceremony. Well, I know I shouldn't be ashamed of finishing in 3 1/2 years instead of 3 years. Lots of people change their major, and lots of people decide to take more time finishing their degree. But heck, that's me, I always find SOME way to feel ashamed of myself. Stupid brain, think happy thoughts!!!

That ass-hat guy I knew in chemistry (that jerk-off who was talking behind my back) got his diploma yesterday. Turns out he did an Honours degree; I was hoping he would have failed miserably. When I was watching the ceremony on the internet, and his name was called out and he went up to get his diploma, it was almost as if my blood pressure skyrocketed. If I was in the audience, I'd be REALLY REALLY tempted to yell out, "BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!! YOU SUCK, ALEX!!!" lol, wouldn't that be real mature of me. ~_^
